The four formulas (height over 5 ft / 152.4 cm)
Devine: men 50 kg, women 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 ft
Robinson: men 52 + 1.9 kg/in, women 49 + 1.7 kg/in
Miller: men 56.2 + 1.41 kg/in, women 53.1 + 1.36 kg/in
Hamwi: men 48 + 2.7 kg/in, women 45.5 + 2.2 kg/in
All four formulas were originally developed for medication dosing, not aesthetics — treat them as a reference range.
Worked example
- 1
A woman who is 165 cm tall = 65 inches, which is 5 inches over 5 ft.
- 2
Devine: 45.5 + 2.3 × 5 = 57.0 kg.
- 3
Robinson: 49 + 1.7 × 5 = 57.5 kg; Miller: 53.1 + 1.36 × 5 = 59.9 kg.
- 4
Healthy BMI range: 18.5–24.9 × 1.65² ≈ 50.3–67.7 kg.
Interpreting your ideal weight
| Your result | Category | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| BMI 18.5 – 24.9 | Healthy BMI range | The target zone for most adults. Your formula estimates should land close to it. |
| Within ±10% of the average | Typical healthy build | When all four formulas cluster together, the average is a sensible target weight for your height. |
| Wide spread between formulas | Formula disagreement | A large spread means the estimates diverge — lean on the healthy BMI range and how you feel instead. |
Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi were developed for medication dosing — treat the outputs as a reference zone, not a verdict.
